Making The Cauliflower Steak
Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to make the perfect cauliflower steak.
Step One: Cutting the Cauliflower into Steaks
Cutting a head of cauliflower into steaks may seem like a daunting process, but don’t worry; it’s very straightforward.
- Cut off the stem end so that all florets are attached to the stalk.
- Place your knife at an angle towards the center of the stalk.
- Slice straight down through the center of the stalk until you have two pieces.
- Cut each piece into ½-inch-thick steaks.
Step Two: Seasoning The Steaks
Once you’ve cut your cauliflower into steaks, lay them flat on a large baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Next, mix olive oil, turmeric, ginger, ground cumin, and sea salt in a small bowl. Evenly distribute this mixture over each side of the cauliflower steak, ensuring each one gets enough coating.
Step Three: Cooking The Steak
You can cook Cauliflower steak in different ways like oven-roasting or searing in a pan over medium-high heat. To ensure your steak turns out deliciously crispy and tender every time, I recommend using an air fryer.
-
Preheat your air fryer at 375°F for 5 minutes or coat large skillet with non-stick spray or ghee then heat up.
-
Add coated steaks *(make sure they are not crowded)in single layers
For air frying:
Air fry for until golden brown about 15 %u2013 18mins
Turn halfway.
Step Four: Serving Your Cauliflower Steak
Once cooked to perfection, transfer your delicious turmeric roasted cauliflower steaks onto serving plates topped with cilantro chimichurri sauce or any other condiments at hand. Serve hot with some quinoa or vegetables on the side for extra nutrients.

Substitutions and Variations
Are you looking to switch things up with the cauliflower steak recipe? No worries, we’ve got you covered! There are many variations and substitutions you can make to the recipe to fit your taste buds and dietary needs.
For a heartier meal, consider adding quinoa to the dish. Simply cook the quinoa according to the package instructions and serve it alongside the cauliflower steak. You can also mix cooked quinoa into the turmeric spiced sauce for a unique flavor boost.
If you’re not a fan of turmeric or ginger, don’t worry! You can omit these ingredients from the recipe and still have a delicious meal. Try using other spices such as ground cumin or chili powder for an alternative flavor profile.
For those who are allergic to olive oil, try substituting it with avocado oil or coconut oil instead. Both oils provide a healthy source of fats and will add their unique flavor when cooking.
Experiment with different serving options! Instead of serving on its own, try pairing the cauliflower steaks with cilantro chimichurri or coconut turmeric tahini sauce for added flavor. You can also grill, bake, sear or air fry your cauliflower steaks rather than roasting them in the oven.
If you don’t have a large head of cauliflower on hand, you can use pre-cut cauliflower steaks found at most grocery stores. If you do opt to cut your own steaks from a smaller head of cauliflower, just simply adjust cooking times accordingly.
The possibilities for variations and substitutions are endless! Don’t be afraid to get creative with flavors and cooking methods. With these tips, you’re sure to create your own unique version of this delicious cauliflower steak recipe.
Serving and Pairing
Once you’ve whipped up these delicious cauliflower steaks infused with turmeric and garlic, it’s time for the fun part–serving and pairing them!
I recommend adding a side of quinoa or cauliflower rice to your meal to round out the dish with an extra healthy serving of grains. The nuttiness of quinoa pairs perfectly with the subtle spice of the turmeric, and the lightness of cauliflower rice allows the flavor of the cauliflower steak to truly shine.
For a pop of color on your plate, sprinkle some fresh cilantro over your cauliflower steaks. This herbaceous addition not only looks gorgeous but also adds a refreshing contrast to the spiced sauce drizzled over the steak.
If you’re in the mood for something a bit more decadent, try pairing your steak with a creamy tahini sauce or coconut milk-based dip. These dips provide a rich complement to the bold flavors of turmeric and garlic found in this recipe.
For those who prefer a meatier option, pair your cauliflower steak with a garlic tenderloin or any grilled meat you fancy. The earthiness of turmeric balances well with bold, grilled flavors creating a winning combination.
This cauliflower steak recipe is versatile in its pairing options because it complements both sides and main dishes equally well. So go ahead and try different combinations until you find your perfect match!
Make-Ahead, Storing and Reheating
Making cauliflower steak with turmeric and garlic is undoubtedly delightful, but what is even better is being able to store and reheat the leftover steaks. This dish can be stored in an airtight container for up to four days in the refrigerator, making it an excellent option for a meal-prepped lunch or dinner throughout the busy weekdays.
To reheat the cauliflower steaks, you can use an oven, stove, or air-fryer, depending on your preference. If you have made this recipe ahead of time, consider reheating in the oven or air-fryer to maintain its flavor and crispy texture.
To reheat in the oven: preheat it to 350°F (175°C) and place the steaks on a baking sheet. Warm them up for about 8-10 minutes until heated through thoroughly. Be sure not to overcook them as they can become mushy.
Alternatively, you can reheat them on the stovetop by adding a small amount of olive oil over medium heat into a non-stick skillet. Once heated through, gently sear each side of the steak for 2-3 minutes until warm and slightly crispy.
If using an air fryer to reheat your cauliflower steak, preheat it at 375°F (190°C). Add some steaks and cook for about 5-7 minutes before checking. Rotate them quickly before adding another 1-2 minutes as necessary until they reach your desired texture and temperature.
When reheating turmeric garlic cauliflower steaks or any roasted cauliflower dish, make sure to keep your cooking duration short, so as not to overcook the vegetables. Additionally, add a tablespoon of olive oil when reheating refrigerated leftovers or roasted leftovers to add some moisture back into them.
That’s it! Enjoy your delicious leftover cauliflower steak with turmeric and garlic without worrying about wasting any perfectly good food.
Tips for Perfect Results
To achieve the best results with this turmeric and garlic cauliflower steak recipe, there are a few tips that can be helpful. As someone who has cooked this dish multiple times, I’ve learned some tricks along the way that can ensure that your cauliflower steaks turn out tender and full of flavor.
Firstly, make sure to cut your cauliflower into thick slices– about 1 inch thick. This will help them retain their shape while cooking and give them a meaty texture. Additionally, basting the steaks with olive oil while cooking will add moisture and depth of flavor to the dish.
Another tip is to not overcook the cauliflower steaks. They should be cooked until they turn golden brown on each side while still retaining a slightly firm texture. Overcooking may result in mushy and soggy cauliflower with almost no flavor.
For those using an oven instead of an air fryer, adding parchment paper onto the baking sheet may help prevent the steaks from sticking and this method makes clean-up much easier too.
If you’re looking for an extra boost of flavor, try adding a pinch of chili powder or topping the finished dish with cilantro chimichurri or turmeric tahini sauce. These flavorful complements pair perfectly with the turmeric and garlic in the recipe.
Lastly, feel free to get creative with your choice of sides- I recommend serving this cauliflower steak with a side of quinoa or grilled asparagus for a balanced and satisfying meal.
By following these tips, you’ll have perfectly cooked and flavorful turmeric and garlic cauliflower steaks every time!
