Step 1: Prepping the Ingredients

Before cooking, it is essential to prep all the necessary ingredients. For this recipe, you will need yellow squash, pork steaks, green pepper, onion, and some common spices such as chili powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.

Start by washing and chopping one large yellow squash into small cubes. Next, chop one medium green pepper into small pieces, and slice one medium onion.

Take the pork steaks that have been cleaned and pat them dry using a paper towel. Cut them into small cubes approximately 1 inch in size.

Step 2: Cooking the Dish

Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add olive oil to the pan. Once preheated, add chopped onions to the skillet and saute them for about 3 minutes or until they are golden brown.

Next, add cubed pork steaks to the skillet and season them with salt, pepper, chili powder, and garlic powder. Cook for approximately 5-7 minutes or until they are brown on all sides.

Add cubed yellow squash, green pepper, and sweet corn kernels followed by additional spices – chili powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Stir well.

Cover the skillet with a lid and cook for another 10-15 minutes or until your squash is tender but not mushy.

Step 3: Serving

Once done cooking, serve hot with grilled pork or any other preferred meat dish. This particular recipe pairs fantastically with grilled pork or pork chops.

– Squash: While yellow squash is the star ingredient in this dish, you can swap it out for zucchini or other types of summer squash like pattypan or crookneck. For a heartier version, try adding acorn squash or sweet potato to the mix.

– Vegetables: If you’re not a fan of green pepper or onion, there are plenty of other vegetables that pair well with this dish. Try adding diced tomatoes, sliced mushrooms, or even some spicy jalapeno peppers for an extra kick.

– Corn: While sweet corn is a classic addition to this recipe, you can switch things up by using canned black beans or kidney beans instead. If you prefer something less starchy, consider adding some diced avocado or roasted red peppers.

– Spices: This recipe calls for chili powder, garlic powder and salt for seasoning. For a more intense heat profile, add some cayenne pepper. You can also experiment with other spices like cumin, oregano or paprika to make it unique to your tastes.

Make-Ahead, Storing and Reheating

Let your taste buds travel to Mexico with this savory and satisfying meal.
Let your taste buds travel to Mexico with this savory and satisfying meal.

Making a dish ahead of time can make life easier for everyone, especially when entertaining. In the case of this Mexican Yellow Squash with Cubed Pork Steaks Recipe, it’s great for meal prepping or for those days when you want a fuss-free dinner. This dish can be made ahead of time and stored in the fridge until you’re ready to reheat and serve.

To store the Mexican Yellow Squash with Cubed Pork Steaks Recipe, allow it to cool completely before carefully transferring it to an airtight container. You can then keep it in the fridge for up to 3-4 days. Alternatively, if you want to keep it for longer, you can freeze it for up to 3 months.

To reheat the dish, simply transfer the desired amount into a microwave-safe or oven-safe container. Microwave it on high for a few minutes until heated through, stirring occasionally or cover with foil and put in an oven preheated to 350°F for 15-20 minutes.

While reheating helps retain most of its flavor especially with slow-cooked dishes like this one, there are instances that over time, the texture might change slightly such as the squash becoming mushy. To avoid this, try cooking them al dente or slightly undercooked during initial preparation as they will continue to cook during reheating.

Overall, this Mexican Yellow Squash with Cubed Pork Steaks Recipe is an excellent option when looking for make-ahead dishes that last long after preparation while still bearing its best flavor profile.

Tips for Perfect Results

Fresh vegetables and juicy pork, the perfect combination for a hearty dinner.
Fresh vegetables and juicy pork, the perfect combination for a hearty dinner.

Achieving a perfect dish is always the ultimate goal when preparing a meal. Below, I’ll share with you some tips to ensure your Mexican Yellow Squash with Cubed Pork Steaks come out just right.

One essential tip is to season your pork steaks with ample amounts of salt, garlic powder, and chili powder. This will not only bring out the meat’s natural flavor but also provide it with a beautiful brown crust. When cooking the pork steaks, ensure that you get the proper sear on them by heating up the skillet first before adding olive oil or vegetable oil. This technique guarantees that the meat doesn’t stick to the pan and cooks evenly.

Another crucial factor to consider is slicing your yellow squash into equal-sized cubes. An uneven cut could result in some pieces being overcooked while others are undercooked. Additionally, when cooking the yellow squash, keep an eye on it to ensure it doesn’t become too mushy.

To achieve a more complex flavor profile in your dish, we recommend caramelizing your onions and green pepper before adding them to the recipe. This method helps intensify their flavors while also reducing their pungency.

If you want a less fatty option while still retaining all of its flavor, substitute pork steaks for pork chops or ground beef. These meats give an equally delicious result without the excessive amount of fat.

Finally, don’t forget always to rest your meat before serving it. Allow your pork steaks to settle for at least three minutes after cooking to let the juices distribute themselves throughout the meat. This practice ensures that each bite you take has a perfect balance of flavors.

By following these helpful tips and tricks, I’m confident that you’ll create a dish that will have everyone begging for seconds!
